Tall fescue
is on of the more important grasses used
throughout the transition
zone in cooler areas. It is a bunch type grass
established from seeds. Tall fescue is best known for its Kentucky 31 variety, but
there are also new improved turf-type varieties available with more shade and heat
resistance qualities along with other desirable traits.
These turf-type varieties
offer the average home owner a way of improving the quality of their lawn without
increased maintenance. Some of these new turftype fescues are sold in blends of
different varieties for even more quality performance.
For Pastures, be sure and
plant ONLY Endophyte free TALL Fescue.
Planting turf types which have high Endophytes can
cause health problems for foraging animals including cattle, horses
and sheep. Read more about fescues for pastures and Endophytes
at our fescue
pasture page.

| Tall fescues make early, fast
growing lawns and can provide a beautiful lawn with low maintenance. This grass specie is
used in erosion control areas; country meadows plantings with wild flowers, and pastures.
Fescue can be used anywhere a cool season all around general-purpose grass is
needed. Tall fescue is a coarser bladed,
dense, clumping grass that grows well in shady areas and is often mixed with other grasses
for just this quality. It was brought to the US in the early 1800s for pasturage
purposes and now grows in about 4/5 of our country. |
 |
| The fact that it stays green all
year makes it more acceptable as a lawn grass. It has a dense root system and therefore a
great tolerance to drought conditions. The older varieties are coarser textured and wear
well. Kentucky 31 tall fescue is one of the more
popular varieties planted throughout the USA. Fescue performs best in heavier soil
with a lot of organic matter and grows in a large area of the USA as shown in the
fescue-adaptation map for Tall Fescue below. |

Note: Planting Tall Fescue in Northern
colder states with temps below 10 degrees can result in winter
kill on Tall Fescue.

Kentucky-31 Tall fescue is
favored for the adaptation to grow well in the shadier northern areas and throughout
the transition areas where cool season grasses wont take the warmer climate.
Kentucky 31also performs well in the upper areas where the
warm season grasses wont tolerate the cooler weather. Tall
fescues are used extensively on lawns, athletic fields, baseball fields,
play fields, polo fields, hospitals, and everywhere that a good, dense utility-grade lawn
is desired. |

This fescue is a cool season, bunching grass, with
coarse to medium texture. The upright growth means that tall fescue is non thatch
forming and leaving the cuttings will only add to the nutrition of the grass without the
buildup of material that causes disease and insect damage to the creeping grasses.
The best known feature of the grass is the shade tolerance level compared to the other
cool season grasses. Earlier seeding under trees that have shed their leaves will
help the fescue to use the extra early heat to germinate and easily establish
before the trees completely leaf out in the spring.
Tall fescue is a grass that can endure heavy
foot traffic and wear. Improved varieties have been developed for higher disease and
insect resistance along with other desirable lawn and pasture traits. All of these
selections are available for planting from seed. Lawns are normally overseeded every
year for thicker sod formation and to repair thinning areas in your lawn. When properly
managed tall fescue can provide a green lawn all year round.
